Heyyyyyyy business fam 🫂

I hope you’re all finding this email rested, calm, and re—

👀

We are interrupted by crackles and white noise…

HOUSTON,

WE HAVE A PROBLEM 👇

1⃣ A PROBLEM: broken clocks 🕜

No, I’m not talking about one of the best songs from SZA’s classic album “CTRL”

(though I’d love to 🤩 feel free to indulge here 👇)

I’m really talking about broken clocks—

and the fact that sometimes they actually tell time (correctly).

Broken clocks are right twice a day.

— several authors according to the internet 🤷🏻‍♀️

2⃣ A REALIZATION: Dang, I guess so 🤷

Think about it.

It’s 7:00 am.

You look at your clock and see 07:00 clear as day.

Another minute passes, and it’s 7:01 am. Yet, the clock stays stuck at 07:00.

POV saving the broken clock

Your clock is broken.

Buuuuuuuuuuut it was right for a moment.

People in your life or sphere of influence act like clocks

(stay with me)

BROKEN CLOCKS are the people who don’t seem to YOU to be a good source of advice.

  • they give financial advice while being buried in debt

  • they are very confident in ideas you’ve seen proven false

  • they counsel you on love while in a failing relationship

  • and the list goes on.

Think of your broken clocks as the people you wouldn’t seek for advice. They don’t SEEM like they have the answers.

And to be fair, normally they don’t.

Often, our broken clocks give us terrible advice every time we see them, so we start to ignore them.

And THEN the one time we ignore them?

Oh, they were 100% right 🫢

3⃣ “So what? What’s your solution?

Just take bad advice in hopes of their one lucky opinion being worth it?”

like, I said “stay with me” for a reason, dear!

Even the most broken clock though is right twice a day.

The natural reaction is to ignore broken clocks, but instead, I urge you to employ your consideration.

How to use a broken clock

  1. When you get advice, consider the source.

  2. Whether or not that source seems valid, consider the actual information.

  3. Then, with your own discernment in tow, consider some research before moving forward.

I’ve missed out on big opportunities, solely because the person putting me on was someone whose advice I did not feel confident taking.

In reality, they had great information.

They said “hey, it’s 7 o’clock” right when it was, in fact, 7 o’clock.

Had I done some research (in this case, checking my phone I guess?) I could have confirmed they were right, and put that information to good use.

Yes, we are talking discernment again.

Don’t be like (past) me.

FILTER information from all sources, even your favorites, by taking the extra steps to confirm that info and research it to be sure you’re right.

4⃣ BONUS: Nuance

Even working clocks can be slow.

So, even when you have a normally credible source of information or advice?

Yeah, I want you to give it that same critical eye.

Consider the source, and still choose to confirm what you’re told—by clocks, people, or anything for that matter!

Until next week

  • “No” is a complete sentence,

  • you might just be guilty as charged,

  • often the only way “out” of hard situations is in fact, “through” them.

  • Oh, and scroll below that beautiful signature and GIF of your business Mom, because I have something free for the business fam.
