Lesson 9 👩🏻‍⚖️

guilty as charged

it’s Thursday again 😏
or maybe another day if you’re late to the party 💓

After last week’s kind lesson about taking a much needed break, we are back with (loving) violence to your inbox.

I come to you with a confession 🫣

I did it.

I’m guilty. On all counts.

  • three counts of putting the needs of others before myself

  • one count of overestimating my bandwidth among family emergency

  • ‘bout 17 counts of doing TOO much and putting off rest

  • two counts of putting off this newsletter because it’s vulnerable AF

it’s not funny, but we laugh to deflect 😉

but you know what?

I’m here anyway, because it’s time to give you a hard lesson on surviving in business.

NORMALLY, your self-doubt is based in fear and the projections of others.

TYPICALLY, your self-criticism is unnecessary.

but sometimes…just sometimes…it’s you.

guilty as charged, just admit it 🫶

- your business Mom

1️⃣ THE PROBLEM 🧐
we’re blind to our real faults

I’m guilty.

You’re guilty.

We’re all guilty.

We love to make excuses when what we really need is accountability.

We all dabble in self-deprecating humor from time to time.

It’s easy to complain about dramatized, not-real faults we have.

Our REAL issues however, WHEWWWW we avoid those like the plague.

POV you when your real issues come up in conversation 👀

2️⃣ A REALIZATION 🧠
there’s a thin line between toxicity and plain ol’ honesty with yourself

Real talk??

This week was insane for me.

Tragic loss. Difficult triggers. Back pain because I sit at my desk too much.

but it was also AMAZING 🤩

  • I finally built a media kit to put myself out there

  • my clients and I aligned and pushed through tech challenges with respect, collaborative spirits, and tenacity

  • things just started to fall into place despite the world acting like it wants to fall apart

if it was so good, what were you so guilty of?

I used any positive development to avoid the daily maintenance I need to sustain these wins.

I let my obligations to others outweigh my need for rest and reflection.

I almost let today go by with a “we’re off this week” email so I could avoid getting REAL with y’all.

but as the greats say, “fuck it we ball”

so I’m here.

3️⃣ A SOLUTION ✨
admit it, don’t forget it
then get better 💪

At the end of the day, there’s two actions we all should take more often.

  1. Spend LESS time complaining about SILLY issues that don’t matter

    • insecurities

    • the biased opinions of others

    • whatever the latest talking head says you should be utterly panicked or stoked about

    • how “toxic” or “problematic” we are with no real focus

  2. Spend MORE time being honest about where we are dropping the ball and put systems AND effort in place to improve those situations.

    • checking in with ourselves

    • meditating

    • reflecting

    • checking regularly that our actions align with our values

Admit where you’re being scared, lazy, or fickle.

Don’t forget it.

Then give yourself some love, celebrate your wins big or small, and keep growing.

4️⃣ NUANCE, my old friend ✨

  • life is hard, so is change

  • you can do it anyway

Until next week,
